Common mistakes

Translation can easily break a layout

Russian text runs longer

A Russian translation usually takes up more space than the English original. Text spills out of cells and boxes, so we adjust the layout instead of just pasting the translation in.

PDFs without source files

If all you have is a PDF or a scan, the text has to be recognized and the document structure rebuilt first. Otherwise the translation has to be assembled by hand.

Numbers, dates and typography

English and Russian use different separators, date formats and quotation marks. We bring them in line with the rules of the target language throughout the document.

«Simon and his team provided me with a translation for a massive, academic/technical product, which included multiple pieces across numerous files. Simon and his team (translators and editors both) were able to ensure quick, accurate translations across the whole package to ensure consistency. I really appreciated that. Simon was willing to work with us on difficult words or turns of phrase and provided quick, professional revisions upon request. He was someone I was happy to work with and would do so again.»

More

Desktop publishing: what you should know

Why translated documents need layout work

A document's value lies not only in the text but in its design: tables, diagrams, numbering, cross-references. If the translation is delivered as plain text, someone has to move it into the layout by hand, which takes time and invites mistakes. We deliver the translation in the same format and design as the original.

How we work

  • We translate right in the source file. Our CAT tool extracts the text from DOCX, PPTX and XLSX and puts the translation back in place, keeping styles and markup.
  • We adjust the layout. Where the translation runs longer than the original, we tighten spacing, rewrap lines and make sure text stays inside its boxes.
  • We check the typography. Quotation marks, dashes, non-breaking spaces and number and date formats follow the rules of the target language.
  • Final review in the layout. We look at the whole document the way the reader will see it.

If you only have a PDF or a scan

First we recognize the text and rebuild the document structure, then we translate. You get the result in an editable format, Word or PowerPoint, so you can make changes. The price depends on how complex the layout is, so we quote it after seeing the files.
